Witness Rock
Mark J. Mitchell  (bio)

Once, long ago, a small donkey,
kicked this stone loose.
It slipped down a mountainside

then sailed—bouncing once
off a rotting log, inventing
the low note. Next, the miracle:

Flying up, quartz chips reflected
a boy on wood on top of stones.
An old man raised a knife.

It struck another rock, skipped
into a mirror-still lake.
The splash dropped slowly.
