The Lamb
Joseph Chaney (bio)

In the photo a soldier’s carrying
a lamb, because in the world the soldier
carried the lamb. You may wonder if he
took the lamb from the village. He didn’t.
He carried it home to the villagers
when it was lost—like a shepherd, although
he wasn’t one and didn’t know the place.
Far from his own country, he was more lost
than the lamb, although he didn’t feel lost,
as if the hut could be his home. A deed
anywhere is the same. Nothing’s better
than being good: a truth he traveled more
than miles to know deeply, gently holding
the lamb the same way he cradled a gun.
